Mauchline CARS Archaeology Scot Chisel toolProject overview

This session will encourage our cohort of young people from Robert Burns Academy to discover how archaeologists record historic buildings. This is a hands-on workshop and will teach the techniques of high-level Historic Building Recording.

The survey will entail writing a descriptive summary of each building which will include:

  • its type
  • its place in the wider topographic landscape
  • the materials used in its construction
  • any visible building phases
  • a general appraisal of the external elevations and features
  • a short narrative section describing the building’s geographical, architectural and historical context and will conclude with the significance of the findings of the appraisal

External measurements will be taken with long tapes, where possible, to establish a sketch plan of each building. Photographs of the building in its setting will be taken and any other relevant photographs that relate to and complement the descriptions within the text.

The buildings to be surveyed are the three lodges of Netherplace House and their associated gate piers. Surveying these connected buildings also provides an opportunity to compare their architectural styles and construction methods.

Historic Building Recording is an ongoing process that keeps records up-to-date and any new findings or significant changes in the buildings in question will be used to update national historic environment records.
