Project overview
Our group of young people from Robert Burns Academy will discover how archaeologists record historic graveyards.
This will include:
- checking headstone inscriptions
- understanding carved symbols and assessing condition
- capturing this information on memorial recording forms
Areas of the cemetery will be chosen to demonstrate how the layout of a graveyard can be recorded. This will include hands-on surveying of parts of the site using a manual plane table and with electronic equipment followed by a comparison of the results with an existing sketch of the churchyard. The young people will also learn how to create 3D scans of selected headstones.
The young people will be able to compare and evaluate these methods for recording sites, to consider the strengths and weaknesses of the tools we use.
Location
Mauchline Parish churchyard, East Ayrshire.
Duration
