Mauchline CARS Archaeology Scot Measuring tapeProject overview

Local volunteers and young people will be able to take part in a small archaeological dig within Mauchline. Potential sites have been identified we are currently in discussions with owners, hoping to secure one in the near future.

Participants will learn all the skills and processes involved in conducting a dig, including an introduction to:

  • tools
  • marking out trenches
  • de-turfing
  • excavation techniques
  • recording
  • photography
  • surveying

No previous experience is needed. All tools, guidance and supervision will be provided by Archaeology Scotland.

These activities will provide the basic skills for volunteers to be archaeologists for a day. They will also provide volunteers with a great opportunity to learn more about their heritage and to stimulate interest and curiosity about archaeological sites.
