Recycling centres and local recycling points

Western Road depot - access restrictions from 25 September 2018

On Tuesday 25 September, the Western Road recycling depot in Kilmarnock will close weekdays, with every effort being made to return to normal operating hours prior to the Christmas period.

These reduced opening hours arrangements are necessary to ensure public safety while we progress with phase two of the essential works required for the upgrade and improvement of our recycling facilities.  A number of buildings on site, including the large cardboard sorting shed and two former office buildings will be demolished during this phase of the works.

Extended hours will operate at weekends for the duration of the closure. Western Road recycling depot will be open 8am to 5.50pm, Saturdays and Sundays. Our waste management site at Garlaff, Skares, KA18 2RB will be open as normal.

For the duration of the closure, the Waste Management Services helpline 01563 554033 will be operating during office hours Monday to Friday.

We apologise for any disruption or inconvenience these essential works may cause, and thank you for your patience as we work to upgrade the Western Road Depot.

Proof of residency requirement

Managing waste in recycling centres is a significant cost to us, being funded by East Ayrshire council tax payers.

From September 2018 all visitors to our recycling centres will be asked to provide proof of their East Ayrshire residency. This will ensure that only waste from East Ayrshire households is being deposited on site. Proof of residency can be a driving licence or utility bill.

Recycling centre locations

We have two recycling centres in East Ayrshire:

  • Western Road, Kilmarnock, KA3 1LL
  • Skares Road, Garlaff, near Cumnock, KA18 2RB

Both centres contain recycling containers for a wide variety of materials. Each container/bay is clearly labelled. To make the sorting process easy it is important that only the correct recyclates go into each container.

If you are unsure which container to use, check with the site attendants as they will be happy to help you.

You can deposit all household material free of charge.

You may use the general waste skips on sites to deposit your excess general waste. However, no commercial waste is accepted at either recycling centre.

Bookings for commercial type vehicles

If you drive a commercial type vehicle (i.e. any van or pickups, liveried cars, or vehicles with trailers) you must book an appointment to access the recycling centres. This includes if you are a resident who is hiring a vehicle.

  • Make a booking on our recycling appointment website - this link will re-direct you to our booking system. You will be asked for your contact details, address and vehicle registration number. This information is required to process your booking and for verification purposes. The information will be held securely by the Council in accordance with Data Protection legislation. For further information on our legal basis for processing information and your rights in terms of Data Protection legislation, please see our Privacy Statement.
