Trading Standards provide advice on how to comply with price and descriptions regulations in accordance with fair trading guidelines. We will also investigate complaints concerning contraventions.

Price

A price indication must be displayed for all goods. It must include all relevant taxes, such as VAT for retail sales, and must not be misleading.

Circumstances in which an indication will be considered misleading include:

  • indicating a reduction when the goods or services were never provided at the higher price
  • failing to show hidden extras
  • failing to make it clear that a price is conditional on, for example, another purchase

Descriptions or claims

Any claims or descriptions made about goods or services must not be false or misleading.
