People learn that they have been adopted at different stages in their lives. Some have always known whilst others may find out in later years or by accident.
Very often this raises questions for people and for some, they may wish to find answers.
Access to birth records
If you were adopted in Scotland before December 1987, you are entitled to have access to your birth records under Article 54 of the Adoption (Scotland) Order 1978.
Adoption contact register for Scotland
The Adoption Contact Register for Scotland is a confidential computerised database maintained by Birthlink (a registered charity offering services to people separated by adoption with a Scottish connection). The Register helps to put adopted people and their birth parents, or other birth relatives, in touch with each other when both parties want this to happen.
Further information on how to access your records and/or place your details on the Adoption Contact Register can be obtained from Birthlink using the contact details below.
Further information on adoption can also be obtained from the Social Work Adoption team.
