Water safety tips

Remember to take the following simple steps when you move in to your home, or if you leave your home unoccupied for a week or more:

Flush through showers, baths, wash basins, sinks and taps continuously for two minutes, beginning with sink taps (hot and cold), following a period of non-use, for example after you have been on holiday.
Keep all shower heads and taps clean and free from a build-up of limescale, mould or algae growth. Regular cleaning every three months will help sterilise and kill any bacteria.
If you have a hot water tank keep it at a temperature of 60°C or greater (does not apply to Combi Boiler systems) Warning: beware of scalding.
If you have a water heater, not a combi boiler, switch it on if possible for a period of one hour prior to use.
Report any deposits such as rust or any unusual matter flowing from the water outlets to the local Housing Office.
