Rocket flying in space passing the planet Saturn, with the words 'Shoot to Saturn'An active travel initiative

Shoot to Saturn, our new active travel initiative, has launched in our Early Years Centres and schools. The programme aims to encourage everyone to make their short journeys active ones.

Transport is responsible for almost half of the CO2 emissions here in East Ayrshire, with over half of these journeys being ones that are less than a mile. These are journeys that we could easily make on foot, rather than driving.

Walking, cycling or scooting to and from nursery or school helps us:

  • reduce our CO2 emissions
  • reduce the congestion at our school gates
  • stay fit and healthy
  • get ready to learn
  • save money

Cosmic crystals

Upon returning from a space mission to Saturn, the crew aboard the Clean Green Rocket discovered that they had lost all the Cosmic Crystals they had gathered during their trip back to Earth. Thousands of Cosmic Crystals are now floating around space and it’s our job to help get them back.

Throughout the year, we have three different areas of space to search for Cosmic Crystals:

  • Challenge #1: Explore space between Earth and the Alpha Space Station - 30 September to 13 December 2024 (10 weeks)
  • Challenge #2: Explore space between the Alpha Space Station and the Beta Space Station - 13 January to 4 April 2025 (12 weeks)
  • Challenge #3: Explore space between the Beta Space Station and Saturn - 28 April to 6 June 2025 (6 weeks)

Participating centres and schools will select a route to travel through space in search of cosmic crystals for each challenge.

To complete this route and arrive at the check-point on time to bank the Cosmic Crystals, pupils need to make active travel journeys and collaboratively earn enough S-Miles to complete the journey within the allotted time scale.

Earning S-Miles

Each time young people travel to and from nursery or school by walking, scooting or cycling, they will earn an S-Mile for their class.

Pupils will earn an S-Mile even if they use Park and Stride, walking part of the journey to and from nursery or school.

A walking circuit will be available in outdoor areas and playgrounds for pupils who travel to school by taxi or bus, and for any pupil who wishes to gather bonus S-Miles for their class during break times.

Earning Bonus S-Miles

Bonus S-Miles can be earned by parents, siblings and staff walking the journey to nursery or school too. Group or class walks, outings and Daily Mile time also earn Bonus S-Miles for classes.

Supporters

Parent and carers can help gather Bonus S-Miles by telling us about any additional active travel journeys that are made to nursery or school, outwith the morning drop off and afternoon pick up times.

Bonus S-Miles can also be earned by telling us about your active travel journeys outwith school times.

Logging our S-Miles

All of the S-Miles and Bonus S-Miles earned during 'Challenge 1' will be shared with Mission Control and added to the Shoot to Saturn S-Mile-ometer.

With your support, we are confident that we will earn the S-Miles needed throughout the year to travel back to Saturn to recover all of our cosmic crystals!
