Consumer complaints

Have you ever experienced:

  • buying goods that didn't work
  • a service provided that didn't live up to the promise given
  • goods repaired but not returned to you
  • work started but not finished

When you are buying services or buying goods you receive some protection in law when things go wrong.

For more detailed information or assistance with a specific issue please contact Advice Direct Scotland (ADS).

East Ayrshire Trading Standards will be notified by ADS of any enquiries from residents of East Ayrshire, or any enquiry that concerns an East Ayrshire trader.

Buying services

You are entitled to certain standards when paying for a service which includes shoe repairs, hairdressers or builders.

Services must be provided:

  • with reasonable care and skill
  • within a reasonable time – even if a completion date has not been agreed
  • for a reasonable charge if no price is fixed in advance
Buying goods

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 sets out the standards consumers can expect of the goods they obtain from traders and remedies if these rights are breached.

The standards include the need for goods to be:

  • of satisfactory quality, including being fit for the purposes for which goods of that kind are usually supplied
  • safe, and matching any description the goods were sold under
  • fit for a particular purpose, if that purpose was made known before the sale
  • as described

If these requirements are breached, consumers are entitled to reject the goods, if in the first 30 days, or request that the trader repairs or replaces the goods.
