Weights and measures
Most weighing and measuring equipment in use for trade must meet strict levels of accuracy.
Our Trading Standards officers regularly test the accuracy of equipment such as petrol pumps, shop scales, weighbridges and pub measures. The quantities in packaged goods are also controlled and checks are made at both factory and retail level to ensure compliance.
Trading Standards Officers can certify the accuracy or verify a variety of pieces of weighing or measuring equipment for use by trade.
Public weighbridge operators
In order to use a weighbridge for public weighings the equipment and the operators must be approved.
The equipment must be of an approved type and carry a UK or EC verification mark. This ensures that the equipment is suitable for such use and that it is sufficiently accurate.
Operators must obtain a certificate of competency which is issued by the Chief Inspector of Weights and Measures following satisfactory completion of a proficiency test.
