What the scheme provides
The Scottish Milk and Healthy Snack Scheme (SMHSS) provides funding for:
- one daily portion of plain fresh cow’s milk (or specified alternative)
- one healthy snack (fruit or vegetables)
Who is eligible
Children qualify if they:
- are pre-school age (from birth until they start primary school)
- spend two hours or more with a regulated day care provider or childminder
Infant formula is funded for children under 12 months.
Payment schedule
Please note:
SMHSS payments will be made in two instalments:
- 1 August 2025 to 31 March 2026 (or from your application date, if later)
- 1 April 2026 to 31 July 2026 (or from your application date, if later)
When and how to register
Registration is now open from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2026.
Who should register
All early years settings, including all childminders registered with the Care Inspectorate, should complete and submit the registration form.
Evidence required
We will request evidence of attendance and purchases, so childcare settings must keep proof such as:
- receipts
- invoices
- contracts
- attendance registers
These will be requested for monitoring purposes.
