Summary of policy aims The policy aims to: educate and inform managers about the potential symptoms of the menopause, how these symptoms can affect employees and how they can support employees at work; raise a greater awareness and understanding among the workforce; outline support and reasonable adjustments that are available; create a safe and supportive environment where employees feel confident enough to raise issues about their symptoms, ask for reasonable adjustments and additional support and enable them to remain at work
Key issues The policy impacts on a number of protected characteristics such as sex. age, disability, gender reassignment and religion/belief. However its impact can be viewed as positive as it aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for employees to raise issues about the menopause and how this affecting them. For those directly affected it supports them to talk about their symptoms, ask for reasonable adjustments and additional support and enable them to remain at work. It also provides sources of information and support for those indirectly affected by it.
Summary of involvement with Groups A working party was established which consisted of employees/trade union representatives to develop the policy. This draft was then shared with HR Officers and Managers as part of the normal HR policy review process and was also presented to the People and Culture Equalities Forum to obtain their feedback.
Key recommendations As no discriminatory factors were found within the policy it is recommended that this is adopted by the Council.
