Summary of policy aims The Policy aims to : • ensure confidential, non-judgemental and sympathetic handling of situations arising from domestic abuse; • assist and support anyone requesting help in addressing problems arising from domestic abuse during and out of hours by providing accurate and appropriate advice about their housing options and their legal rights and responsibilities; • improve the safety of our residents affected by domestic abuse, and prevent further incidents by encouraging earlier reporting and responding rapidly; • ensure that the support we provide is equally available to all, regardless of gender, race, religion, language, age or sexual orientation.
Key issues The policy sets out the Council's commitment to assist and support anyone in East Ayrshire who is experiencing domestic abuse, the policy refers to everyone, regardless of gender, race, religion, language, age, sexual orientation, disability or marital status. Research shows that women are more likely to experience domestic abuse than men and to suffer more serious injury and ongoing assaults than men. However, it should be acknowledged that men can experience domestic abuse from their female partner and that domestic abuse also occurs in same-sex relationships.
Summary of involvement with Groups The policy was brought to the East Ayrshire Violence Against Women Partnership meeting of 11/09/19 and the development of the policy received unanimous support. A consultation exercise was carried out from 07/01/19 to 11/02/19 via the East Ayrshire residents panel and the results informed the development of the policy.
Key recommendations The policy was amended and updated in relation to the feedback from the consultation exercise and then approved.
