The Career Break Scheme is designed to support flexibility in working arrangements and to provide employees with the benefit of time away from the workplace while retaining continuous service. A career break can be taken by any employee for a number of different purposes including childcare, voluntary work, travel abroad, study or to undertake fostering. There will be an overall benefit through the provision of time off from work for caring or fostering purposes. The impact of the career break scheme on wider socio-economic disadvantage and in reducing the inequalities associated with disadvantage will be low as it take up of the scheme is low and the benefits are limited to individual employees and close family or foster children.
