Why are there health and safety laws?

The law is there to protect employees and the public from workplace dangers. Health and Safety at Work is very important, so there are laws which require all of us not to put ourselves or others in danger.

Does health and safety law apply to me?

Yes, to all businesses, however small; also the self-employed and to all employees.

Who enforces health and safety in my business?

What do inspectors do?

They visit workplaces to check that the law is being complied with. Mainly they help you to understand what you need to do. They take enforcement action only when something is seriously wrong. Their main aim is to help you get it right.
