Through the Community Renewable Energy (CoRE) Project, East Ayrshire Council, in partnership with Coalfield Community Transport, is launching a new Community Electric Car Hire Club to provide affordable, flexible and sustainable transport, helping communities across Cumnock and the Doon Valley become better connected.

Additional funding has also been secured through:

  • Scottish Power Energy Networks' Transmission to Net Zero Fund
  • Strathclyde Partnership for Transport's People and Place Fund
  • Nine Community Council's Group's Strategic Area Fund

Electric vehicles will be available to hire from 17 August 2026 in Cumnock and Dalmellington.

As the project develops, the service will expand alongside new solar-powered Electric Vehicle (EV) charging hubs in Cumnock, Dalmellington, Muirkirk and New Cumnock, improving access to both electric vehicles hire and charging infrastructure.

The Community Electric Car Hire Club has been developed to:

  • improve transport options for rural communities
  • support access to employment, education and essential services
  • encourage greater use of electric vehicles, and
  • contribute towards East Ayrshire's journey to net zero

The fleet includes three family-sized electric vehicles and a wheelchair accessible vehicle to improve accessibility and tackle social isolation for disabled members.

Whether you need a vehicle for work, shopping, appointments or leisure, the car hire club offers an affordable and convenient alternative to vehicle ownership.
