Please note this scheme is for East Ayrshire Council tenants only.

If you are currently on the scheme, you will remain on it unless:

  • you move to another Council property
  • your tenancy changes (for example, from a joint tenancy to a sole tenancy)
  • your financial circumstances change

If you no longer want to receive garden maintenance, or if your circumstances have changed as above and you may no longer qualify, please email customerliaisonteam@east-ayrshire.gov.uk.

About the scheme

The Garden Maintenance Scheme is for East Ayrshire Council tenants who need help looking after their garden.

The scheme includes:

  • nine grass cuts (every three weeks during the growing season), and
  • three hedge cuts (every eight weeks for cycle 1 and 3, 12 weeks for cycle 2 during the growing season)
  • one weed-killer spray

The timing of these services may change depending on the weather and ground conditions.

Who can apply for the scheme

To qualify for the Garden Maintenance Scheme, you must:

  • be an East Ayrshire Council tenant
  • have a confirmed permanent physical disability or have reached the age of 60
  • have no one living with you aged 16-59 who is able to look after the garden

Important notes:

  1. Where someone aged 16–59 lives with you and is a Registered Carer, they won't be counted in the assessment – but you'll need to show proof that they receive Carer's Allowance.
  2. If someone aged 16–59 lives with you and is not a Registered Carer, you’ll need to show evidence that they also can’t maintain the garden.
  3. If you’re applying due to a disability, you’ll need to provide evidence that you’re unable to maintain the garden.

Supporting evidence

Supporting evidence can include:

  • a letter from a healthcare professional confirming the tenant or household member aged 16-59 is not fit to maintain the garden, or
  • proof of receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

Cost of the scheme

The Garden Maintenance Scheme costs £30 per year.

It's free if you are:

  • aged 60 or over and get help with rent via Universal Credit or Housing Benefit, or
  • unable to maintain your garden area due to a disability
