Exposure to excessive vibration can lead to health issues such as Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).
It is essential that exposure to vibration is managed through purchasing of lower vibration tools, task rotation, and the use of aids such as rigs.
What is HAVS?
HAVS is a disorder which affects the blood vessels, nerves, muscles and joints of the hand, wrist and arm, which can become severely disabling if ignored.
Symptoms
Operatives should inform their line manager if they experience the following symptoms:
- tingling and numbness in the fingers
- fingers turning white, blue then red in the cold and wet, and are painful
- loss of feeling in the fingers
- pain, tingling or numbness in the hands, wrist or arms
- loss of strength in the arms
Operatives who use vibrating tools must participate in the Health Surveillance programme run by Occupational Health.
