It might seem early to be thinking about cold winter nights, but it’s never too early to think about safety in bed. Every year faulty electric blankets, particularly those over ten years old, can pose a danger, and even start house fires, if they’re not properly maintained.
Fortunately though, help is at hand, with East Ayrshire Council Trading Standards running a free electric blanket testing programme from 29 August till 9 September, so that people can sleep easy in their beds this winter.
Councillor Tom Cook, spokesperson for Improving Community Safety explains: “We all love being cosy on cold winter nights, and a well maintained electric blanket is a great way of keeping warm, but over the years they can develop tell tale faults such as fraying fabric, scorch marks, exposed elements, worn flex or loose connections
.“Of course safety in the home is paramount and I would encourage everyone with an electric blanket, to take advantage of this free electric safety check which we’re offering before the dark nights draw in. It could save your life.”
For peace of mind and to ensure your blanket is safe for the coming winter, simply take it along to any of the Council’s Customer Service Centres in Galston, Stewarton, Cumnock and Dalmellington, or alternatively, drop it into the Trading Standards office, Civic Centre South, 16 John Dickie Street, Kilmarnock, KA1 1HW.
