Investigation

An investigation takes place when a referral is received by someone in authority containing information about a person they think is at risk of harm.

Every referral has to be investigated and the purpose of any investigation is to:

  • check accuracy of allegations
  • protect the person from harm
  • establish and record facts about the circumstances
  • establish with the adult whether they feel  their personal safety is at risk; whether they wish intervention
  • decide if protective/other action is needed
  • identify sources and levels of risk
  • decide whether or not abuse has taken place
  • ensure that appropriate action is taken in respect of anyone causing or likely to cause harm
