Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry – oh and also recycle all your waste!
Back in August the Council began to extend its food and plastics recycling system to all households in East Ayrshire, a service which will be fully rolled out during 2014. Participating households now receive a weekly collection of food waste and mixed household plastics and our rural households also receive a weekly black box collection service.
This service, which since August has been extended to rural properties including farms; Mauchline, Auchinleck, the Irvine Valley and parts of Catrine, has been incredibly successful. Local residents are really getting behind the new service; one of the busiest times so far was Halloween when the food waste bins were full to overflowing with pumpkins.
And Christmas is expected to be busier still with people recycling leftover food, Christmas wrapping paper, plastics and cardboard boxes.
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council, and Councillor Bobby McDill, visited the depot at Western Road, Kilmarnock to view the new lorries which are making the new service possible. He said: “The new lorries look quite incredible with their colourful graphics but underneath the bright exterior is a state of the art system which allows our crews to separate waste on the kerbside and maximise the recycling potential.
“Halloween was a good test for the new system when thousands of households recycled pumpkins and Christmas is set to be an incredibly busy time for all our recycling services not just food. Our residents are right behind our efforts to increase recycling rates and I know that Christmas will be no different.”
During the Christmas period, residents who would normally receive a collection on either Christmas Day or New Years Day will instead receive a Saturday collection, with Boxing Day and Thursday 2 January 2014 collections moving to the Sunday of each week.
The recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and Thursday 2 January.
Opening hours over the festive period will be as follows:
Christmas Eve – 08:00 – 14:30
Hogmanay – 08:00 – 14:30
Saturdays – 08:00 – 15:50
Sundays – 10:00 – 15:50
All other days – 08:00 – 15:50
All collections and opening hours will return to normal on Monday 6 January.
