Gauchallands East Tenants and Residents Association were victorious at the inaugural Tenants Information Service (TIS) National Excellence Awards Ceremony lifting the award for Tenant and Resident Organisation of the Year.
The glittering ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Glasgow, recognised the positive change the group has made to their community.
Through partnership working with the Council and the East Ayrshire Tenants and Residents Federation, the group has made huge strides within East Gauchallands with projects which have increased community spirit.
They secured grants of over £60,000 and created a community meeting place called the Hub which has been used for meetings, coffee mornings and charity events.
Peter Hood, Chairperson of Gauchallands East Tenants & Residents Association commented: “We are very proud of our achievements so far and it is down to the hard work and dedication of the committee and help from the East Ayrshire Tenants & Residents Federation, East Ayrshire Council and local organisations that has made this project a success it is. The school children from Galston and St Sophia’s Primary Schools love coming up to see the bio-domes and learn about the different types of fruit and veg that we grow.”
During 2016, the group will continue to work on their bio dome project, growing fruit and vegetables for sale to the local community and reducing the carbon footprint. Local schools will also be supporting the project with pupils learning how to grow fruit and vegetables. A banana tree is causing great excitement and everyone is hoping it will bear fruit in the Spring.
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council said: “I am delighted that Gauchallands East Tenants and Residents Association has been recognised as best in Scotland. They have worked so hard within their community to introduce positive change and are at the forefront of community projects within Galston.”
