With businesses all over Scotland starting to re-open following lockdown, East Ayrshire Council has teamed up with local business leaders to launch a brand new East Ayrshire Gift Card, designed to make gift giving easier and boost local businesses by encouraging people to explore what’s on offer locally.
The concept is simple. Local shops, service providers, health and beauty, accommodation, food and drink providers can sign up for free to join the card scheme. Their business is then listed on a website which also sell the East Ayrshire Gift Card.
That card, which can be ordered online or through a Facebook page, which is updated regularly with news and special offers, is pre-loaded with the amount requested by the buyer and can be used in any of the listed businesses in towns and villages throughout East Ayrshire.
East Ayrshire Council Leader, Douglas Reid explains: “We’ve all heard the Shop Local message before, but now it’s more vital than ever that we do our bit to support these businesses which have been hit so hard during the lockdown.
“We’re all familiar with the benefits of using our local high streets and supporting independent traders and local companies, keeping money circulating within our own communities.
Now more than ever, with the re-opening of retail, leisure and hospitality businesses following lockdown, our local businesses need support. By choosing to buy from a nearby business, eat or drink in a local coffee shop, restaurant or pub, using a local tradesman to carry out a vital job or getting a local business to carry out a services for you, you’re helping keep your neighbours, friends and family in jobs, feed and clothe their children and keep our streets vibrant and our buildings in a good state of repair. It’s about more than just shopping, it’s about “Eat, Shop, Love Local”.
“By buying, giving and using an East Ayrshire Gift card you can give a gift to more than a loved one or friend, you’re giving support to local people and helping your community.”
Peter Telfer, Chair of Kilmarnock Business Association who’re backing this project, agrees: “The beauty of this card is that for the businesses involved it not only raises their profile and will hopefully attract new customers, it also costs them nothing to get involved. It’s also open to more than just shops. Leisure venues, services and hospitality businesses can also join, giving card holders a fantastic choice of where to spend their cards.
“And it’s not just for Kilmarnock and Cumnock. Whether you’re in Galston, Dunlop, Dalmellington or Drongan, any business can get involved. For card users we hope it will encourage them to explore places and businesses they’ve never known existed. At the same time it’s a great way to support local people, their jobs and their families as we all work together to recover from this time.”
