It was a day of celebration and reflection when the first Roon the Toon Jim Buchanan Memorial trophy was presented to the fastest East Ayrshire Council and East Ayrshire Leisure male and female employee.
Colin Fulton, Painter and Decorator from Housing Asset Services, was first over the line in an incredible time of 40:33 while Maxine Gorman, Teacher from Kirkstyle Primary, was first female in a personal best time of 47:30.
There was a two minute gap between the top three men and just 12 seconds between the top three women.
The Kilmarnock Harriers donated the trophies and £30 prize money in memory of Councillor Jim Buchanan, who had been a driving force behind Roon the Toon. Councillor Buchanan’s wife Jan presented the trophies to Colin and Maxine along with Provost Jim Todd, Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council, Councillor John Campbell and Billy Robertson, Club Together Officer from the Kilmarnock Harriers.
Provost Todd said: “It was a real privilege to present the Jim Buchanan Memorial Trophy to Colin and Maxine. Jim passed away last October after a short illness and we are all still feeling his loss. He was a great man, passionate about his local community and about regeneration and economic growth.
“Jim shared the vision the Kilmarnock Harriers had to raise the profile of the town through sport. He could see the benefit of attracting thousands of people to the area and the positive impact that this would have on East Ayrshire.
“It is absolutely fitting that the Jim Buchanan Memorial Trophy was presented to our fastest employees. Jim valued all of our employees very highly and it is right that his memory lives on, not just in the built environment around us, but as a man with a vision for East Ayrshire.”
