Quiz quintet’s quirky hit is a record for Red Cross cash

_REF4800Provost Jim Todd welcomed the 5World pub quiz team from Kilmarnock to Council HQ recently to congratulate them on their new musical careers!

The team members, Jamie Stephenson, Kevin McAvoy, Scott Jenkinson, Ken Robb and Simon Jenkinson decided last year to use their winnings from quiz sessions at their local pub, The Riverbank, in a very different way.

With the help of local recording studios, film production companies and graphic designers they wrote, recorded and funded a charity single called ‘We Should be a Family’ to raise funds for the British Red Cross.

‘The Red Cross are often the only support for desperate families and kids arriving in Greece on makeshift rafts and dinghies as they try to escape the conflict in Syria’, says songwriter Ken Robb. ‘We thought we could raise money by releasing a record to help these families through a tough winter – so once we had the song, our pub quiz team became a band to record it!’
The 5World members are part of the 25+ member male vocal group at Centrestage in Kilmarnock.

With no previous recording experience, the boys needed help and got it from three local Kilmarnock companies who produced the record and video. Centrestage Recording Studios, video company Alba Productions and graphics company PN Design all gave of their time to make the team’s project a reality.

The team’s story has spread far and wide and they were even featured on BBC TV’s Reporting Scotland.
Provost Todd said: “The boys’ story is a great one and it’s wonderful to see the way they responded to what they were seeing and hearing about the families escaping the conflict in Syria. The record is great and I hope people will download it to raise money for this worthwhile cause.”
