South Scotland MSP Brian Whittle has secured the backing of his party leader, Ruth Davidson MSP, for the Ayrshire Growth Deal. Brian and Ruth were joined by new Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP Bill Grant for a meeting with senior members of the Ayrshire Growth Deal team earlier this week.
The Ayrshire Growth Deal is a package of measures designed to boost the Ayrshire economy through big investments in infrastructure and several other projects. Funding for the deal comes from a number of sources including the Ayrshire Councils and the Scottish & UK Governments. South Scotland MSP Brian has been active in promoting the deal to senior figures at a Scottish and UK level and, with Bill Grant MP, a former South Ayrshire Councillor, he invited Ruth Davidson to visit Ayrshire and learn about the exciting initiative from AGD Director Patrick Wiggins and Programme Manager Tricia Irving.
Brian Whittle MSP said: “I’m grateful to Ruth for taking the time to come and hear about the Ayrshire Growth Deal. This has the potential to transform the Ayrshire economy in the years to come and I’m delighted to have Ruth on board. A lot of people have put a huge amount of work into getting the deal to this point and I’m determined to take us over the finish line.”
Bill Grant MP said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Ruth to Ayrshire today, and to hear first-hand the good work undertaken by the Ayrshire Growth Deal team. The importance of the Ayrshire Growth Deal cannot be underestimated. Going forward, the deal shares the ambitions of the UK Government’s industrial strategy, and will unlock Ayrshire’s potential.”
Ruth Davidson MSP said:“I was pleased to meet the bid team and hear, first-hand, about the ongoing work to make the Ayrshire Growth Deal a reality.”
“This is an ambitious bid that commands wide support. A number of UK government ministers have already sat down with the bid team and I’m keen to put my weight behind the plans as well.”
