Hygiene work dishes out Eat Safe Awards

Six East Ayrshire establishments have earned an Eat Safe Award for their high standards of hygiene, cleanliness and food safety.

Councillor Tom Cook, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Equalities, presented representatives from Glennie House Care Home in Auchinleck, Dalmellington Care Home, Bute House in Cumnock and Ayrshire College’s Salt and Barrel Training Restaurant, The Refectory and The Still Room cafe with an Eat Safe Award.

Councillor Cook said: “Within East Ayrshire, the Eat Safe Award scheme from Food Standards Scotland is going from strength to strength.

“At the most recent presentation I was delighted to present certificates to Glennie House, Bute House, Dalmellington Care Home and to Ayrshire College’s three eating establishments.

“Ayrshire College caters daily for thousands of students and teachers who moved into their incredible new premises last October. The two main eating establishments within the college received the prestigious award and I was particularly pleased that the training restaurant received the same accolade. Young people are learning to cook and the importance of excellent hygiene standards.

“The first three care homes to receive an Eat Safe Award are committed to providing the best care for their residents and ensuring that they provide the best quality food. I was delighted to present awards to the three premises and recognise their commitment to food safety.”

The Eat Safe award provides an incentive to food businesses to strive for food hygiene and food safety management standards beyond those that are required by law. For people eating in these establishments, it is sign of excellence in standards of food hygiene. It gives people extra confidence in the food they are served.

The Eat Safe Award sits in parallel with the Food Hygiene Information Scheme which rates hygiene standards against legal requirements. The Eat Safe Award recognises businesses that have achieved standards over and above the legal requirements.

Only five other premises in East Ayrshire have earned an Eat Safe Award from Food Standards Scotland – George McCulloch Butcher, Lochside House Hotel, the Chip Box in Stewarton, Hollybush House and Daldorch House School.
