Encouraging young people to use their vote

East Ayrshire’s Vibrant Communities Team has been out and about encouraging 16 and 17 year-olds to vote in the upcoming Scottish Parliament Election and as part of this, has been taking a ‘polling booth’ exhibition around schools to familiarise young people with the voting process.

The polling booth and ballot boxes have been set up in dining areas and Team Members were there to answer any questions pupils had on the voting process, hand out the Electoral Commission’s information leaflet and encourage participation in the election.

Fiona Lees, Constituency Returning Officer for the constituencies covering the East Ayrshire Council area, who took the time to visit Grange Academy and Park School to speak to first time voters, said: “ I have no doubt that the exhibitions have been of use to young people and have helped them to feel more comfortable about the actual process of voting on 5th May. I would encourage all young people who are eligible to vote to turn out and make their votes count on polling day.”
