Tonnes of rubbish and hundreds of bags of litter were collected from the A77 recently during East Ayrshire Council’s programmed litter clear up.
To protect the workforce, lane closures were in place on both carriageways from the M77 at the East Ayrshire boundary to the South Ayrshire boundary as litter was cleared from roadsides and the on/off ramps.
In total, Council workers collected almost 700 bags of litter, 11 tonnes of road swept detritus and large amounts of debris from vehicles including wheels, wheel trims and an array of household rubbish and furniture.
The thoughtless actions of motorists who dispose of rubbish from their car windows costs the Council dearly. The road closures alone cost the Council almost £4000 and 30 Council operatives were diverted from normal work to assist with the clear up. Throwing rubbish from a car window isn’t just inconsiderate; it also diverts cash from local communities.
