Update from Stewart Turner, Head of Roads: Ayrshire Roads Alliance.
Stewart Turner said: “The Ayrshire Roads Alliance is working towards a solution for the movement in the road on the A71 between Darvel and Newmilns.
“The safety of motorists and road users is of paramount importance to the Alliance. The movement is being carefully monitored and following Storm Frank there was a slight worsening of conditions which led the Alliance to extend the length of the traffic lights.
“Now we intend to move the diversion traffic totally onto the Darvel bound road. Because of this we are doing a short section of work to regulate the road. We started this work yesterday (12 January). Unfortunately, there has been a second Scottish Water burst which has delayed our work and created traffic delays this morning.
“Once this repair has been carried out by Scottish Water, the Alliance can complete their work to allow traffic to use just one side of the road which will provide the most effective traffic management.
“Officers from the Alliance are engaging with specialist consultants and contractors to ensure that repair works are carried out as quickly as possible. We are hopeful that the repair work will start on site in early February.
“The Alliance is acutely aware of the importance of this road to local people. Closing the road would mean long diversions for motorists travelling to and from Kilmarnock and would not be a decision we would take lightly.
“I would like to apologise for the inconvenience these works have caused and I would like to reassure local people that we are working on a solution.”
