Modern Apprenticeships

Modern Apprenticeships offer people aged over 16 the chance of paid employment linked with the opportunity to train for jobs at craft, technician and management level.

Looking for an Apprenticeship?

Becoming a Modern Apprentice (MA) is a great way to kick start any career. How else could you learn on the job, receive invaluable practical experience and work towards an industry-recognised vocational qualification, whilst getting paid?

A Modern Apprentice is:

  • Someone who is employed
  • Someone who is learning on-the-job
  • Someone earning a wage from day one
  • Someone working towards a industry-recognised qualification

Modern Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 or over. However, if you're over 25 you can still apply, but your employer may have to pay for the cost of training, depending on the sector and Modern Apprenticeship selected.

Looking to employ an Apprentice?

For most businesses, the process and cost of taking on a new employee can be an expensive and difficult undertaking.

That's where our Economic Development team can help. With part funding of wages, help with recruitment and ongoing training support, East Ayrshire based companies can now get assistance to select, employ and train young people as Modern Apprentices to help grow their workforce.

In the last two years more than 300 young people have been helped to gain qualifications and full time employment by the Council as Modern Apprentices in a range of industries - from engineering to knitwear, customer service, warehousing, joinery and construction work and social care.
