Every year we provide over 1.2 million school meals made with fresh, local ingredients providing healthy varied menus which encourage children to try new things and appreciate good food. Each school has its own arrangements in place to support pupils in making healthy food choices and to help them with the practicalities of lunchtime so that they can fully enjoy their meals.
School meals continue to have a high profile nationally and we welcome the Scottish Government's guidance called Better Eating Better Learning: A new context for school food, which is aimed at encouraging the connections between what children eat with the impact on improving health, learning, the environment and the local economy.
We back valued local suppliers for sourcing our fresh ingredients. Ours is the only local authority which has acheived and retained the Soil Association Food for Life accreditation at Gold Standard since 2008.
Menus and prices
Our menu is operated on a three-weekly rotation which ensures variety to choose from. The current cost of a standard two-course school meal is £2.00.
The three-week menus are designed to offer children a variety of nutritious lunches that include familiar favourites, as well as tempting new tastes to try. Meals are freshly cooked in schools each day, using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. We encourage young people to come and try our range of fresh seasonal soups, traditional family favourites, adventurous flavours from around the world, convenient packed lunch options and daily snacks - which include baked potatoes, sandwiches, paninis, toasties, fruit and salad pots.

Free school meals
Since 5 January 2015, all children in primaries 1 to 3 are entitled to a free school meal. This is a great opportunity for children to sit down with their classmates and enjoy a nutritionally balanced two course meal sourced from our local suppliers.
In 2008 we ran a pilot scheme for free school meals which was a great success, with 85% of primary 1 to 3 pupils having lunch with us. This kind of success has convinced the Scottish Government that free school meals should be offered to all pupils in primaries 1 to 3 in Scotland.
Having a school meal will enable your child to enjoy the social interaction of eating in an environment where they can try different foods every day, and it can also help to increase their concentration for their afternoon classes. Staff will be in the dining halls every day to help and encourage your child, ensuring they have an enjoyable dining experience.
If your child is in primary 4 or above and you receive certain benefits your child could also be entitled to free school meals.
