Every parent/carer of a school pupil in Scotland is being asked to take part in a national census to help improve the extent of their involvement in their child’s learning.

The Census wants to hear from parents of school children to drive improvements locally and help monitor the progress of policies at national level.

Details will be sent to you via your mobile phone in the next few days, but if you do not receive this, you can still connect to the Census below:

If you require more information, please contact Catrina O’Neil using the details below.

The census will provide information to the National Action Plan on Parental Engagement and to the National Improvement Framework for Education.

The quality and extent of parents’ involvement in their child’s learning and the important role this plays in their child’s education is essential and positive partnerships between parents and schools are vital to securing the best outcomes for our children and young people.

The Census wants to hear from parents of schoolchildren to drive improvements locally and help monitor the progress of policies at national level.

All parents/carers who have children in primary, secondary or additional support needs schools in Scotland should take part in the Census.

Only one questionnaire per school should be completed, even if you have more than one child at school.

Completing the Census should take no more than 15 minutes.

The Census covers the main areas detailed in the National Action Plan on Parental Engagement, seeking your views on the themes of:

  • parental engagement
  • parental involvement
  • learning at home/in the community
  • family learning

You can complete the census on your PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet.

Yes. The PIE Census will go live on 7 May 2019 and needs to be completed by Friday 14 June 2019.

We’ll submit the data to the Scottish Government in August and they will publish the nationwide results in December 2019.

The Scottish Government is leading on the Census, which was designed by a group of Parental Engagement Officers from different local authorities and representatives from Education Scotland and the National Parent Forum Scotland.

The current Census is a pilot and will be evaluated before any decision is taken to make it more frequent.

Yes, absolutely. Responses to the PIE Census questions are confidential and schools will not have access to data that would identify parents.

The only information released will be results based on grouping together parent/carer responses.

For example: “85% of parents/carers within a school reported feeling satisfied with their child’s school” but the school would never know which individual parents had responded to this question.

East Ayrshire Council will look at the data to improve areas where parental involvement and engagement with schools can be improved.
