School meal provision during lockdown

East Ayrshire Council’s catering service will continue to operate throughout the period of remote learning to support young people and provide access to food.

Children attending school

Children attending our schools during the remote learning period will have access to the school meals service on a daily basis. A range of hot and fresh options will be available. 

Children who are entitled to free school meals will be able to use their entitlement, with all other children being able to make payment through ParentPay as normal.

A reduced menu is being provided and all children will receive a two-course meal and those required to pay will be charged £2.15 from their ParentPay account. Please ensure sufficient funds are available on your school meal accounts.

Free school meals

The Council, with the support of the Scottish Government, has been able to continue to provide food to all children who are entitled to free school meals at home throughout periods of lockdown and school holidays, and this will continue.

Spring hardship payment

A Spring Hardship Payment of £100 will be paid to low income families this April. Find out more and how to apply.

Food boxes

From Monday 18 January 2021, a weekly food box will be provided to all children who are entitled to free school meals at home. This will include a range of fresh and grocery items to provide your child with a variety of food for breakfast and lunch.

Free school meals at home form

Children who are entitled to free school meals and are attending school will not receive a weekly food box.

With the return of early childhood provision and P1-P3 to schools from Monday 22 February 2021, the weekly food box for those who have been receiving these will stop and meals will be provided in school.

For those entitled to free school meals in year groups P4-S6 and receiving a food box, this will continue until further notice.

Catering services lunch provision will be open for any secondary pupils attending for practical lessons in school.

Food box delivery days

We will be delivering food boxes to the following areas on a weekly basis on the days indicated below, between the hours of 9.30am and 2pm.

  • Monday - Crookedholm, Crosshouse, Dunlop, Fenwick, Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs and Stewarton
  • Tuesday - Auchinleck, Catrine, Cumnock, Logan, Lugar, Mauchline, Muirkirk, New Cumnock and Ochiltree
  • Wednesday - Bellsbank, Dalmellington, Dalrymple, Darvel, Drongan, Galston, Hurlford, Newmilns and Patna

Food boxes for children and young people with allergens will be delivered on a Tuesday, no matter what area you live in.


We hope that providing food boxes will encourage young people and families to stay at home longer reducing the need to go out and the spread of COVID-19 locally.

We have also taken all precautions in providing these services. Catering staff are operating with strict hygiene rules and risk assessments to reduce the risk of transmitting COVID-19 including non-contact deliveries.

Allergies and dietary needs

If you received a food box, we already hold details of any allergens and dietary requirements that your child may have.

If you have been awarded free school meals recently and your child has allergens or special dietary requirements, please tell us about them by filling in the free school meals form above.        

Fresh local produce

Since 2005, the Council has supported local suppliers and by continuing to offer direct food boxes to our young people we are maintaining spend with our local producers and businesses. 

Further food support

We recognise that at this time of year, money can be tight and access to fresh food can be challenging. There are  community organisations, supported by the Council that can provide guidance and support.
