Talented athlete support programme

East Ayrshire Council is committed to developing today's promising athletes who have the potential to become tomorrow's sporting heroes.

As part of the Council’s charter for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014, the Council and Sports Council are offering athletes residing within East Ayrshire a package of support to help them reach their full potential in their chosen sport.

East Ayrshire Council and the Sports Council recognise the enormous effort and substantial personal cost that resident sportspersons commit to attain international and national success in their chosen sport.

As a form of recognition and assistance, individuals are invited to apply to one of East Ayrshire's three strands of Athlete Support:

Application for developing potential

Applications will be accepted all year round as the format has been changed to a rolling process to ensure that athletes can apply if/when their status changes.

Application for podium potential

Applications will be accepted all year round as the format has been changed to a rolling process to ensure that athletes can apply if/when their status changes.

Special Olympic fund

A fund to support local Special Olympians has been established by East Ayrshire Council which will give our local talented athletes the recognition they deserve.

Athletes who have the potential to participate at a National Special Olympic Event are also encouraged to apply for funding of up to £200.

More awards glory for East Ayrshire’s talented athletes

East Ayrshire’s most talented athletes, sports clubs and volunteers have again been celebrating sporting success at the annual Sports Council and Talented Athlete Awards evening.

This year saw a new record set, with 74 athletes being supported through the Talented Athlete Support Programme, the most ever to have been awarded Developing Potential and Podium Potential support.  In 2015, 71 athletes received similar support.

All athletes are either National or International Champions, or represent their country in their chosen sport.

Councillor Eoghann MacColl, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing said: “With so many athletes being supported and the lit growing every year, it really does demonstrate that East Ayrshire has produced and will continue to produce top class athletes through their hard work, determination and commitment.

“The East Ayrshire Sports Council Awards also recognise the achievements of club coaches and their volunteers and without them the profile of sport in East Ayrshire would not be where it is today.”

Amongst the winners were a five time World Champion in Taekwondo and a club volunteer who has dedicated over 60 years to boxing for his club and country.

In addition to a host of personal recognition accolades, the following main awards were presented:

  • Disabled Sports Person of the Year – Kathryn White (Kilmarnock Jets)
  • Jim Higgins Youth Sport Personality of the Year – Chloe Graham (Ayrshire ACRO)
  • SALSC Service to Sport – Tom Brown (North West Amateur Boxing Club)
  • Individual Performance of the Year – James Reed (Phoenix TKD)
  • Team Performance of the Year – Claire Ferguson & Kerry Gibson (Ayrshire Gymnastics)
  • Sports Club of the Year – North West Amateur Boxing Club

David Carey, Chair of East Ayrshire Sports Council added: “This has been another inspiring event and I am incredibly proud of how much success our athletes gain and bring back to East Ayrshire. For a small area we really do have some amazing talented athletes, clubs and volunteers who all ensure that sport in East Ayrshire is thriving.”
