James Mair Newmilns Photograph Collection: (356)
James Mair was the custodian of an important collection of local photographs, most of which were taken by John Macintosh of Strath Mill, located between Galston and Newmilns, in the period 1890-1914. The images show town views, general local views, churches, schools, castles, social events, groups and personalities and also include later photographs from the Newmilns Civic Week of 1949. more information
The collection is an important and valuable record of life in Ayrshire. Some of the images have been reproduced in James Mair’s local history publications, and local historian John Strawhorn had a number transferred from their original glass plate format onto film for educational use at Ayr Academy.
John Macintosh was an architect by profession but was also a local historian, poet, painter, fiddle maker and a keen amateur photographer. His collection has been carefully preserved by the local community and passed on through the decades. Latterly, the collection was passed to James Mair who not only ensured the safe keeping of the glass plates, but also worked hard to bring the collection to a wider audience. Over a period of years, with the hard work of Ayrshire Archives and East Ayrshire Council the Mair Newmilns Photographic Collection has been digitised and catalogued and can now be viewed all over the world via this website (www.east-ayrshire.gov.uk/librarymaircollection/).
The originals have been deposited with Ayrshire Archives for safe keeping and can be viewed in the Ayrshire Archives Centre.
