RENT ARREARS

Why is it important that rent is paid?

A large amount of your rent goes into repairing and upgrading tenants' homes. By failing to pay your rent, we can't do as much as we'd like to do.

What if I ignore my arrears?

Please don't ignore your arrears. The quicker you contact us the easier it will be for us to mutually agree a repayment plan.

If not, this could result in your wages being arrested or worse, by being evicted from your home.

So what happens if I contact you?

You will be offered a private appointment within your local area housing office with an experienced Housing Officer.

The Housing Officer will ask a few simple questions about your circumstances, to check if you are eligible for any additional benefits that you may wish to claim for.

They can then agree realistic and affordable payment arrangements to help you pay off any arrears.

If you make an arrangement to pay by instalments we will suspend any current recovery action against you.

However, if you break your new arrangement we will continue the legal process to recover your tenancy.

What if I am unable to call at the office?

Please contact your local housing office and they will arrange for a Housing Officer to call at your home.

If my rent is not paid in advance does this mean I am in arrears?

Yes, your rent should be paid either weekly, fortnightly or monthly in advance depending on how regularly you normally pay.

It is not just arrears that I have, what about my other debts?

We can arrange an appointment for you with properly trained debt advisors such as the Money Advice Team or Citizens Advice Bureau, who can help you negotiate a payment agreement with other companies you owe money to.
