Housing
Multiple Occupancy
A house in multiple occupation (HMO) is shared accommodation (including
flats, bed sits, lodgings, B&B and other communal accommodation such
as student residences and hostels) occupied by several people who share
facilities such as a bathroom, toilet or kitchen. Under current legislation
an HMO must be licensed if it is the main residence of 3 or more people
who are not from the same family.
An HMO must be licensed to ensure the accommodation is safe and meets
certain standards. It is the owner of the property who must apply for
the license. The standards that the property must meet are physical standards
and tenancy management standards.
You can obtain a licence application from East Ayrshire Environmental
Health, Western Road, Kilmarnock, KA3 1LL.
