Contents Insurance
Whether you own or rent your house, you will want to protect your own
furniture, belongings and decoration against such things as fire, theft,
vandalism or water damage. Many Council tenants believe that the Council
automatically does this but THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
The Council would recommend all tenants to consider insuring their personal
belongings. The Council have introduced a scheme with a leading insurance
company to provide a reasonably priced household contents insurance scheme
and introduce Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance plc as the underwriters
of the scheme.
Why Do I Need Contents Insurance?
If your personal belongings and furniture were destroyed or badly damaged
could you find the money to replace them? Not many people could - so everyone
should have the protection of insurance just in case a disaster happens.
The Council only has insurance for the buildings it owns and not what
tenants store in them.
The policy does not cover absolutely everything and you should read
the brochure and sample policy wording for more information about what
the policy covers.
Do I Have To Go With The Scheme Offered By The Council?
No - not at all. You can pick any insurance company that you like. The
scheme the Council has in place is competitively priced as we have negotiated
a special rate for tenants.
How Do I Join The Council Scheme?
Just fill in a proposal form, sign it and take it in or send it to your
local housing office. Proposal forms are available from your local housing
office. Alternatively, you can download and print the form from this website.
You must complete the proposal form answering all the questions and remember
to sign and date the form. Unsigned forms will not be accepted.
How Much Will I Be Insured For?
That depends on the value of your belongings. You need to work out how
much your contents would cost if you were to replace them at today's value.
The insurance cover provides replacement as new cover for your contents
other than clothing and household linen when a deduction is made for wear
and tear. It is important that the sum insured you select is enough to
replace all your contents.
How Is The Insurance Paid For?
Premiums are collected weekly in the same way as your rent, so a payment
card will be issued to you. Failure to keep up payments could affect any
claim you make or cancellation of your insurance.
The East Ayrshire Council contents insurance scheme is underwritten by
Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance plc (No. 93792).
Registered in England and Wales at St. Mark's Court, Chart Way, Horsham,
West Sussex, RH12 1XL.
Authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
