SOLID FUEL HEATING - NOTES FOR GUIDANCE

Some of Your Questions Answered

When will Work Start?

The contractor will agree an installation date with you during his survey and will give you written confirmation of this date, normally seven days prior to the work commencing.

How Long will the Work take to Complete?

The heating installation will normally take three days to complete, although plasterwork and joinerwork may take a little longer. You will be offered temporary heating by the Contractor while work proceeds.

Will I have Hot Water while Work takes place?

The Contractor will try to ensure that any periods without hot water are kept to a minimum, and this should not exceed one day. If for any reason this is exceeded an electric immersion heater will be installed to provide hot water.

Will I need to be present when the Works are being carried out?

It is advisable that, if possible, you vacate your home during the day to allow the Contractor to carry out the works, although it is entirely up to you if you wish to be present. Floorboards in each room will be taken up to allow the installation of pipework below the floor and you will therefore have to "watch your feet".

Will I need to Lift Carpets?

The Contractor will arrange for carpets to be uplifted normally the day before and relaid the day after heating is installed. Floor finishes i.e. foam backed carpet and vinyl including linoleum can be difficult to lift since they are easily damaged. The contractor may point this out to you at the time of the survey.

Will I need to pack away any Ornaments, Pictures, Breakables etc?

Yes. The Contractor will be working in all rooms and needs a cleared working area to carry out the work. All breakables, etc. should be cleared and packed away to prevent any accidental damage.

The contractor will, however, move any furniture as required.

Will my Electricity be Off?

No. The Contractor will make sure that you have electricity through out the installation,
although short interruptions may happen during work to connect the new controls to the electrical system.

Will I get help towards any redecoration costs?

Yes. You will receive £40 in decoration vouchers after the work is complete.

Dust is inevitable - but precautions will be taken to minimise it, e.g. dustsheets etc.

What do I do if my new System is not working?

First you might like trying a few things. Follow the points listed below for guidance:-

(a) Ensure adequate fuel boiler setting, ash pan is not choked and firebed is clear.

(b) Ensure that pump is switched on.

(c) Make sure that the thermostats on your Thermostatic Radiator Valves (located in your livingroom and bedroom) are turned up.

Allow 15 minutes and then check to see if the radiators heat up.

(c) Make sure that your programmer timeswitch is set correctly and calling for heat. This is usually located in the kitchen.
