COMMUNITY WARDENS

What are Community Wardens?

Community Wardens are ordinary citizens who have been appointed to act as the eyes and ears of particular communities. They will act as contact points between you and relevant agencies so that we can all work together to help Build Strong, Safe and Attractive Communities in East Ayrshire. The Wardens do not have the same powers as the Police, therefore cannot be considered as a substitute or alternative to the Police. However, they will ensure that relevant agencies, including the police, are made aware of your concerns, complaints and community issues.

Why do we have Community Wardens?

The Scottish Executive has released funding from it's 'Building Safe, Strong and Attractive Communities' funding for establishing Community Wardens throughout Scotland.

The purpose of the Wardens is to help communities to access whatever services they need to improve the quality of life in their area. Members of the public should feel free to approach the wardens with suggestions, complaints, concerns and successes in their area, so that we can support them in building safe strong and attractive communities.

All residents have a responsibility to keep the environment clean and tidy and to help residents achieve this aim East Ayrshire Council has granted powers to Community Wardens to enforce laws on a range of issues affecting the quality of the environment in your neighbourhoods and communities. This includes litter, fly-tipping, and dog fouling. Penalties ranging from £50 can be enforced. Community Wardens carry out regular patrols and also respond to individual complaints within their designated areas.

The aim of the Community Warden Service

  • Engaging with young people in the community to provide them with information on social and leisure activities, and enabling them to raise issues of concern.
  • Engaging positively with local people, providing community safety advice and assisting in reassuring and supporting vulnerable people and victims of crime.
  • Making appropriate referral's about anti social behaviour to our anti social behaviour team and developing an awareness of community based initiative's designed to tackle this problem.

The wardens are currently working in New Farm Loch, Onthank, Altonhill, Knockinlaw, Longpark, Hillhead, Shortlees, Barshare (Cumnock) and Auchinleck from 1.30pm to 11.15 pm – 7 days a week except 25 and 26 December and 1 and 2 January.

Point to Note: Any information provided to the wardens will be confidential and only released to other agencies with your consent.
