Transport and Streets

20's Plenty Initiative

Why reduce traffic speed?

The benefits from driving at 20mph are:

  • fewer casualties
  • fewer severe injuries
  • reduced vehicle emissions
  • less vehicle noise
  • the roads feel safer for all users

In East Ayrshire excessive speed accounts for almost 43% of road casualties. All road users are vulnerable, particularly children and older people.

30% of all pedestrian accidents result in death or serious injury. Reducing speeds will help to reduce the number of accidents and lessen the severity of injuries to pedestrians.

Most pedestrian accidents, particularly those involving children, happen on roads in 30mph areas. The reduction of speeds to 20mph will make it safer and easier to cross the road in residential areas.

(1.31Mb) This leaflet will give you more information on the 20's Plenty project and the benefits of reducing your traffic speed.

(63Kb) We need to assess the success of this project - if you would like to help us please take some time to complete this very simple questionnaire. Send it back to the Roads and Transportation Division at the address shown on the leaflet or hand it in to any of our Local Offices.
