Inspection of Care Homes

The Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001 (the act) provides the Care Commission with powers relating to the core elements of regulation - registration, inspection, complaints and enforcement

The Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care became operational on 1st April 2002 as a non-departmental public body to take on the regulation of care services in Scotland.

Inspection - the Care Commission is required to inspect all care services covered by the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act every year (some services are visited twice a year) to monitor the quality of care provided to people who use the services.
The inspection will focus on the user of the service, taking into account the new National Care Standards and compliance with other legal requirements. All inspections will examine the extent to which services safeguard the principles of dignity, privacy, choice, safety, equality, diversity and realise the potential of all service users.
