An Act of Parliament, The Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995, was passed to ensure that account is taken of what carers say when services are provided for the people they look after.

As a result you are entitled to ask Social Services for an assessment of your needs as a carer:

• when the person you care for has their needs assessed or reviewed;
• if you provide a "substantial amount of care on a regular basis";
  
  or

• if you intend to provide a "substantial amount of care on a regular basis".
