Hungry for Success – a whole school approach to school meals
in Scotland
The Scottish Executive has introduced Scottish Nutrient Standards for
school lunches. Under the Hungry for Success initiative children will
learn the benefits of healthy eating through classroom discussion and
by being encouraged to make healthier choices in the dining room.
Hungry for Success aims to make school meals healthier by:
- Increasing potatoes, pasta and rice
- Increasing fruit and vegetables
- Increasing fibre
- Reducing fat
- Reducing sugar and salt
- Using healthy cooking methods
School meals offer nutritionally balanced, well presented food in an
environment that is well ordered and sensitive to the needs of pupils,
and which improves the lunchtime social experience for children.
East Ayrshire is currently the only Scottish Council to have achieved
commended status for all primary and secondary schools in the Scottish
Healthy Choices Award Scheme. Leading on from this success, and in accordance
with the Hungry for Success initiative, Onsite Services has developed
and introduced new school lunch menus.
