EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

Ayrshire Hearing Impairment Service and
Ayrshire Educational Audiology Service

Hearing loss can result in delayed language acquisition with poor communication skills and immature speech. It is vitally important that the hearing loss is diagnosed early and appropriate support is provided.

Ayrshire Educational Audiology Service

It is the Educational Audiologist's responsibility to undertake the assessment of all pre-school children who are referred to the Service. The Educational Audiologist also has responsibility for ongoing audiological management of diagnosed hearing impaired children.

The Service deals with

  • early identification of hearing loss
  • confirmation of normal hearing in children with communication difficulties
  • support to the family prior to a joint visit with the Coordinator of the Hearing Impairment Service
  • evaluation and advice on audiological equipment and resources available to staff and children
  • close liaison with education and health colleagues

Pre-5 Clinics are held on Monday afternoons and all day Thursday. Attendance is by appointment only.

Ayrshire Hearing Impairment Service

The Hearing Impairment Service is an educational provision supporting the audiological, educational, social and emotional needs of hearing impaired children and their families from diagnosis until school leaving age.

Peripatetic staff visit children at home and in educational establishments throughout East, South and North Ayrshire.

Inclusion is promoted by:

  • providing specialist support options to enable hearing impaired children equality of access to the curriculum
  • monitoring management of audiological equipment within the acoustic environment
  • promoting language development through a range of communication modes
  • working in collaboration with pupils, mainstream staff and other agencies
  • creating positive attitudes towards deaf people within the school environment and local communities
  • offering relevant information to enable informed choices
  • ensuring ongoing evaluation of pupil progress

The team is managed by the Co-Coordinator and consists of ten specialist teachers of the deaf, and one sign language assistant who support the distinctive range of learning needs of hearing impaired children and their families.

Referrals to the Service are made by the Educational Audiologist. Both Services operate from a central resource base located in East Ayrshire.
