Winter Maintenance
Before each winter season commences, a review is carried out of the service
and improvements made where appropriate. The work is undertaken mainly
by Roads Contracts, the in-house contractor, to criteria set out by the
Head of Roads, based on statutory requirements.
Keeping East Ayrshire's Roads Open
East Ayrshire Council has statutory responsibilities, to take such steps
as it considers reasonable, to prevent snow and ice endangering the safe
passage of vehicles and pedestrians over public roads for which it is
responsible.
Transport Scotland (a Department of the Scottish Executive) is the Roads
Authority for all Trunk Roads in Scotland.
They have contracted Amey Highways Ltd. to provide a maintenance service
(including winter) for the A76 Trunk Road and the A77 Trunk Road from
the boundary with South Ayrshire at Spittalhill to Meiklewood interchange
at the north end of Kilmarnock.
Connect Road Operators are responsible for providing a maintenance service
(including winter) on the M77 Motorway and the adjacent A77 from Meiklewood
Interchange to Malletsheugh Interchange in East Renfrewshire.
The adjacent A77 from Meiklewood to Floak at the boundary with East Renfrewshire
is now the responsibility of East Ayrshire Council.
The contact telephone number for Trunk Roads is 0800 028 1414.
The adjacent Winter Maintenance menu on the right hand side links to
pages that explain the priorities that the council has set for its winter
road treatment programme.
