East Ayrshire Opencast Coal Subject Plan

The Subject Plan sets out and provides detailed guidance relating to sustainable opencast coal extraction throughout the whole of East Ayrshire and establishes a clear policy framework within which individual opencast coal development proposals will be assessed. The plan has been prepared to bring to the attention of the general public and other interested parties, the main issues which have arisen through the development of opencasting within the area, and details the Council’s approach by which these issues can be addressed. It also provides clear advice to developers on the Council’s approach to opencast proposals and identifies criteria for the operation, restoration, aftercare and after-use opencast sites.
