This year’s Newmilns Gala Day enjoyed a glorious day of sunshine – and huge crowds – when it was held in the village’s Greenside fields recently.
Provost Jane Darnbrough was delighted to be asked to officially open the gala day and joining Provost Darnbrough in the platform party were Des Browne MP, Margaret Jamieson MSP and local elected member Councillor Harry Wilson. Gala Queen Seonaid Herdman was crowned and a great time was had by everyone.
“When you see how successful local events like this are, with so many people out enjoying themselves, you realise that our local towns and villages have much that they can be proud of,” said Provost Darnbrough. “I really enjoyed my day and met some wonderful people. People who came from far and wide to join in the gala day had a wonderful time so it is clear that the support that the local community gave to the event is a credit to everyone in Newmilns.”
The gala day was the culmination of a week of events for Newmilns gala week, including a concert in the Morton hall, a quiz night, a car treasure hunt, It’s Newmilns Knockout and 5-a-side football and other sporting events from n mountain bike race to a dominoes evening!
Councillor Harry Wilson said that the range of events for the gala week really did mean that there was something for everyone. “I was delighted to welcome both locals and visitors to the Gala Day which was an ideal opportunity for Newmilns to show the world at large that a town is not just a collection of houses and shops and streets, a town is at heart a community of people living together, sharing in each other’s successes and supporting each other in more difficult times. In Newmilns we have a small community with a big heart, and the enthusiasm with which the community gets together to put on such a great occasion shows the town at its best.
“I would like to offer my own thanks to the organising committee and to everyone who came along to make it such a wonderful day. Special thanks go to Provost Jane Darnbrough and Margaret Jamieson MSP for their support and special thanks to Des Brown MP for taking time from his no-doubt very hectic schedule to come along and join in the festivities. This year’s event was a great success - roll on next year!”
