There was dance fever at Catrine Games Hall recently as young competitors took part in “Dance Factor”, a class which incorporates a wide variety of the most up to date dance techniques including Cheerleading, Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk and Street Dancing.
Launched in January this year, “Dance Factor” classes have been attracting hundreds of young people to various games and community halls throughout East Ayrshire. Participants of all ages including Pre-5s, Juniors (5-12 years) and Teens (13-17 years) are able to participate and learn new dance moves within a structured class designed specifically for each age group.
Expert tuition is provided by instructors who bring tremendous energy, enthusiasm and expertise to all classes ensuring participants learn and develop new dance skills whilst also having fun!
The competition at Catrine Games Hall attracted around 400 people with participants coming from Darvel, Mauchline, Drongan, Catrine, New Cumnock and Muirkirk. Winners of the Street Dance competition were the Darvel team; New Cumnock won the Hip Hop section and Mauchline Juniors took the prize for Cheerleading. In the Freestyle section, Rachel Young from Darvel won the 5-7 year-old category; Zoe Jamieson from Catrine won the 8-10 year-old category and Mauchline’s Rebecca McMichael came out on top in the 11 and over category.
Councillor Jim O’Neill, Chair of the Community Services Committee, said: “This is a great initiative which the young people seem to be thoroughly enjoying and getting a lot out of. I’d like to say a big thank you to staff for the excellent competition day they organised, something I hope will continue next year. I would encourage any young person who is not already taking part in Dance Factor to go along to their local games or community hall to find out how they can join in.”
